Calcium in a Parrots Diet

I add calcium to my breeder birds diet because eggs are made of calcium and so are bones. When a bird is laying eggs, she draws calcium from her body. If there is a calcium deficiencies then the calcium is removed from her bones, weakening then and leaving her prone to broken bones.

Parrots also need vitamin D3 to metabolize the calcium. Calcium occurs naturally in many foods, but my high performance breeders need extra help. I have a scarlet macaw that has laid 10 eggs in the last 4 months. I've never had a large macaw lay that many eggs and I am concerned for her health.

I routinely crush a Tums antacid tablet into each food dish. My birds seem to not object to the flavor. I have also used NeoCalglucon, added to the water to provide additional calcium. Care must be taken that the water bowls are changed daily and sterilized daily. NeoCalglucon can obtained from your pharmacist without a prescription.

Full spectrum lighting is very important in metabolizing calcium in birds. Nobody really knows how much and what artificial lighting will work best. There are lots of claims out there - go take your best guess.
